Reminding us why our sites need a blog

I don’t know about you, but sometimes updating my blog feels like such a pain. My friend Kate offered to write this post for me this week and it was a great reminder why we should all consider a blog on our main websites. I hope you find it helpful too!

Business websites typically all follow the same pattern: there is a homepage, an about page, a page that lists your products or services, and a contact page. They all have the same impersonal feel and they all serve one purpose, which is to give consumers information about the business and hopefully land a sale. Every business needs a website because we live in an online world. But every website also needs a blog.

  1.  It’s a place to share thoughts and ideas – Blogs give websites a space to bounce around ideas and share thoughts with your consumers. It’s a place where consumers can see the day-to-day activities going on with the business, which gives a more intimate feel to the business than a website that strictly contains factual information is able to maintain.

  2. It gives you a way to interact with consumers – Creating a sense of community with your customers builds a certain amount of loyalty and respect between them and the business. Having a blog where customers can comment and give feedback gives you a way to interact with them on a more personal level, and opens up lines of communication that show that their opinion matters to you.

  3. It gives your website personality – Any way that you can take your business away from the typically cold stance that a website generally has is good for business, and blogs allow you to showcase personality, creativity, and humanity. When customers see you as more than a business they are more likely to have a higher dedication and commitment to the company.

  4. It works wonders for indexing – Constantly updating the content of your website’s blog allows for better indexing on the major search engines. Search engines love fresh content, and you’ll be rewarded for continually supplying it by having higher rankings, which means more people will be able to find your site.

  5. It helps bolster your reputation – Customers are more likely to respect you as a trusted source when they know that they can rely on your company’s blog to supply them with pertinent, helpful information. It’s a way of soft-selling your products or services without shoving it down people’s throats. Good reputation = more customers = good for the customer, good for the business = win-win situation all around!

Having a blog in addition to your company website creates a more intimate and trusting relationship with your consumers, as well as helping its rankings online. This approach is an all-around win for everyone, making it a must-have for every business looking to get an edge on the competition.

Yup to all of this! People need to step off this blog purity stuff that social media people like to rail on. Everyone talks about customer service, quality, blah, blah, blah but few things show off the culture of the company like a blog with a voice. It gives potential customers feel for who they are getting into business with.

#4 is perhaps the highest value reason to blog. Even just one post a week does wonders for indexing.

Totally agree with all of the above. From an SEO perspective blogs do wonders for indexing purposes. Most company websites are pretty static. People post some content initially and then they leave it the same for year. Well, search engines don’t like static websites and they likely wont rank well. Blogs solve this problem and more.

For reputation management and SEO you should have a blog on your site. This is extremely useful, especially when you target a niche. Unluckily I was not able to convince my partners to set up a blog on our page.:-(
