Domain names are still a branding tool

It used to be considered vanity to own a domain name consisting of your name, but with so many people working from home or freelancing, the thought of having your own domain name may fit in to your business plan.

A common name, like Jane Doe, will be quickly bought up, but a more complex name is easier to buy. The fact that many people have the same name will help you to establish your territory early. It may come as a surprise to you that the name that you choose is already taken. It may be even more of a surprise to find that the person that took it is in the same business as you.

This is one of the reasons that it may be necessary to buy up as many of the domain extensions as you can when you make that purchase. You can check available domain names at Register.com to find out if the dot net or dot org version of your name is available. If they are, buy them before someone else does. There is nothing worse than being confused with someone else if your livelihood depends upon your name.

Even if you do not use your website domain name to generate traffic to your online business, it makes a nice place to build your resume and offer potential employers a place to see your previous work samples. It also comes with an unchanging email address. Your website can even be willed down to the next generation.

A quick entry of my name into the URL box, and I find out that my name – and similar spellings of it – are all owned by a car dealership in the midwest…. lol

I think it’s a good idea to pick up as many extensions of your domain name as possible as well. One reason, I think, is because many people simply type in the wrong extension. As a side note, what Marshall said was true with me too, as my first name and middle initial (which is what my friends call me) is a registered .Com, lol.

I would buy only one extension that is .com Unless you are already established your online presence, or made headlines in real world, most likely no one will be searching for your name. I would also buy a variation of the name but again only . com extention.

Domain name / company name are a vital part of marketing. The key is identifying key words that identify your brand and then look for names that evoke those key words or even include them. Whether or not that domain is available is a whole other issue.
